Custom Designs: Two Story Yurt with Wings

The ultimate in custom design and architectural interest.

Now comes some of the exciting stuff. At Mindful Living, formerly Oregon Yurtworks, many years ago we realized that our modular product was the ultimate in "kit" homes. We realized that one option oftentimes did not preclude the mixing of another option with it. And so as the years went by and the client requests became more intricate, we realized that combining various options was not only achievable, it put us well on our way to truly being a custom home builder.

Although we do not suggest trying to incorporate every one of our options in one building, oftentimes a couple options combine incredibly well.

In this case we have found that with any of our two-story buildings the addition of wings around it can be done with little modification and hugely gratifying results. With this particular combination of design styles you can start with any size central core. Most of the time that this style is chosen, the exterior of this two-story core has the upper floor only as a partial to create a balcony and a lodge feel inside. From the lower floor the upper reaches of the warm cedar ceilings are still felt and the central skylight bathes both the upper and lower floors in its heavenly glow.

What then gets exciting is the fact that some of the needed additional spaces can then be incorporated around the exterior of the base size. These wings can be as few or as many as you like and oftentimes they cascade around the structure just enough to leave the large and impressive view area unimpeded from the central space. We have often built these wings off of both sides of the central space (like a bow tie or butterfly) with the non-view side then continuing the wing roof structure around to connect with the wings on the other side. What lies below these roof-only areas is a wonderful covered deck or screened in porch that gives the large wrap-around porch a whole new meaning.
