Single Story Tandem Yurt
This photo shows Mindful Living, formerly Oregon Yurtwork's Office and is a 24' and 29' Tandem, 1474 square feet.
Two yurts simply being better than one.

The tandem style (whether it be one- or two-story) is oftentimes described as our most interesting design. If you love the yurt space and structure, why not have as many of those spaces as possible within your house - the concept goes. So rather than just build up, or than just add wings on, we often solve the issue of building larger homes with more space by combining two or more structures. What you get in this design is the ělong thin houseî concept. With this general design you get to maximize those rooms with access to your wonderful view (hopefully you have one), maximize your access to southern light (if we can orient the building correctly) and get some wonderful separation of space within the home.

Oftentimes the active spaces (and noisy) are situated at one end of the structure and the passive (or quiet) spaces are situated at the other. Add to this concept flexibility, the fact that you can combine any one of our basic sizes and then build these connectors between the structures almost any width or length and you can see that once again we have accomplished the goals of being able to provide a truly customizable space for each different client and each different site within a prefabricated package.

With that said, let us qualify one aspect of that. The connectors that we can prefab will have to be rectilinear in shape and within 4í modules both width-wise and length-wise. With the plans that you may view of ours will be some connectors that are a little more complex that just a simple rectangle. They have 45-degree angles and vary greatly in width or length. These designs are buildable - they are just not prefabbable. In most cases we urge our clients to design the home that they want. Even though these complicated connectors will have to be built on site, they have been done many times, all with great degrees of success. The slight added cost of this design choice oftentimes is not enough to derail an entire project.
